Orig Disney Production Drawing Jiminy Cricket Pinocchio
This is an original production drawing of Jiminy Cricket from the 1940 Disney animated feature film Pinocchio. This drawing depicts the wise cricket as a hobo character, with patch on his hat, and toes poking through his shoes. This is before the Blue Fairy brings her magic and transforms him into gentleman. Jiminy cricket appeared in such tattered clothes for only a brief time in the film, so this particular drawing is quite rare. There is also an animator's notation in pencil, delineating his "inside coat." Medium: Graphite, red, green, and yellow pencil on paper Matting: Double matted in black and white; cut-through section exposing stamped scene informationProduction number: 2003 Sequence number: 1 Scene number: 7Image area: 7 7/8 x 8 7/8 inches Framing: Gold painted wood frame Frame size: 16 3/4 x 17 3/4 inches Condition: Excellent Production drawings such as this were used in the creation of animation, and it provides a unique glimpse into the animator's creative process. Traditional animation is a multi-step process, of which drawings are a key part. The animator creates the design and movement of the characters from drawings, and these drawings are then transferred onto acetate cels to create a production cel.
Jiminy Cricket was such an inspiring presence that he went on to represent all that was good in the world of Disney. His debut film is still one of the most magical of all time, and the magic of animation is preserved here in this wonderful original production drawing.
