July 16 1963 badge signed by Senator Hickenlooper to permit his guest, Miss Paula Schroeder, to enter the Senate chambers. Bourke B. Hickenlooper (1896-1971) was Lieutenant Governor and then Governor (1943-1945) of Iowa before gaining election to the U. S. Senate, where he served from 1945 to 1969. A very conservative Republican who headed the Republican Policy Committee (1962-1969), Hickenlooper often clashed with Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen, whom Hickenlooper considered too willing to compromise with Democrats. Hickenlooper served in the U. S. Army in France during World War I.
