Orhan Peker (1927-1978), ‘Abstract Form in Turquoise’, 1973
This abstract work from 1973 by the Turkish painter Orhan Peker shows the silhouette of a semi-spherical form, which arises from a root that seems to grow from the lower edge of the image. The shapes are delicately coloured in turquoise and rise in front of a metallic grey background, which seems to be covered in a veil of mist. Orhan Peker aimed to find a perfect synthesis between traditional Turkish painting and modern European art in his paintings. As a result he created classic ornaments in his own skilfully modified, subtly oriental style.

The work is in good condition with minor marginal blemishes and a small cut along the lower border. It is signed and dated lower right ‘Orhan 73’. The dimensions of the sheet are 62 x 100 cm.

Orhan Peker (1927-1978)

Orhan Peker was born in Trabzon, in Northeastern Turkey, in 1927. He studied at the State Academy of Arts in Istanbul under the painter and poet Bedri Rahmi from 1946 until 1951. Just after having finished his studies, Peker’s works where shown in a solo exhibition in Istanbul, which attracted international attention. In 1956, Orhan Peker attended Oskar Kokoschka’s summer academy in Salzburg. In the following years he worked successfully as an independent artist in Paris, Brussels, Cologne and Munich before moving back to Turkey at the end of the 1950s. In 1966, he was awarded with the title artist of the year in Turkey. In 1970 he received the first prize for the design of the Turkish Pavilion at the Expo ’70 in Osaka. His works are characterised by the artist’s close affinity to his surroundings, which is perceivable in his primarily figural depictions.
