Grand shrine, which exhibits Burma’s traditional craftsmanship of the 19th century

This Buddhist shrine dates to 19th century Burma. The splendid cabinet is carved from wood and opulently lacquered in gold. It is adorned all around with multicolored crystals and glass. The lower part with two glazed doors is raised on a platform. On top rests the central part with a drawer below the tabernacle in which a Buddha figure can be displayed. The cabinet is crowned by a quilted top in the form of a stupa.

To this day, the arts and crafts of Burma are defined by the products of the region around Shwedagon, the country’s landmark and one of the most famous stupas in the world, which is known for its works of art made of wood, jade or silk as well as figures from wood, marble, bronze and alabaster.

The shrine is in good condition consistent with age. The wood shows some cracks, there are some losses and color abrasions. The dimensions are 194 x 108 x 68 cm (height x width x depth).
