Opera Omnia Iacobi Sannazarii By Jacopo Sannazar (Rome: Iacobus Tornerius, 1590), 1590 printing, 352 pages, frontispiece with nautical and Nereid themes, full brown calf, 24mo, gilt title and decorative flowers. This book contains the work of the Italian born poet and humanist, Jacob Sannazar. Although he was one of the most popular later Latin poets, he is not read anymore due to the vulgarity of his language and vernacular. He was appreciated for the quality of his verses and their clearness of tone and structure. It was Sannazar who was among the first to develop the pastoral genre which he treated like small windows of the past, looking into antiquity, describing various occupations and lifestyles which still existed in his time, and he compared them to those of old. He wrote many types of poetry, but these were finest. In 1526, he wrote a religious poem entitled, "De Partu Virginis", which earned him the nickname: "The Christian Virgil." The book is in food condition; corners bumped, leather slightly worn.
