1 Large 18th century RARE Eglomise scene technique!
The button is hand painted in what is known as the French technique of Eglomise work which is a technique by which the artist would reverse painted the glass in actual fold leaf and then take a fine needle like tool and outline the design in the gold leaf they desired. After that they would painted black over the entire reverse of the glass giving the effect that this Eglomise design creates. When this button arrived for us to sell in our auction I was sure I was familiar with the scene and thought it must be in the Big Book of Buttons, but no it wasn?t, so I thought maybe Tender Buttons book or my grandmothers book, The Colorful World of Buttons, but it was in neither. At that point I was ready to give up, but the next morning it suddenly came to me where I had seen this image before. I have a very rare artist portfolio book of paintings on paper from a French artist in the 18th century that I inherited from my grandfather George Ertell and lo and behold the hand painted image was in the book (as pictured here next to the button). Some of you m ay recall seeing this book on display at the NBS show in Appleton in 2024 in the Friday night program on French buttons. The painting in the book is on parchment but was obviously the artists rendering used to create this rare Eglomise example. NOTE: You are bidding on the button, and it does NOT include the artist rendering in the book, but if you are the lucky winner of this very RARE button please let me know and I will send along a color copy of the rendering in the book for you.
