Brackenridge's writings about Louisiana became a source for Washington Irving's "Astoria," as well as inspiring many others. Besides the natural features of the country, Brackenridge was interested in its antiquities as well. He describes the American bottom area, and speculates "...that this ground at some remote period of antiquity, was inhabited by at least half a million of souls." A few pages later he describes the Trappist monks' society on Monk's Mound at Cahokia. [Howes B688]<p>Some tape repairs to front hinge, previous owners inscriptions on endpapers, tp, first page.
