(Gilbert and Sullivan Films, 1939) (39) silver bromide 12 x 15” semi-gloss prints on individual backing-paper mounts, comprising an elaborate, comprehensive, and almost certainly unique archive for this fondly-remembered British filming of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic operetta. From its breathtaking quality it is no surprise that this collection, housed in a flap-folding string-tie cover, was created for just one person, the director Victor Schertzinger. Four of the images are signed in fountain pen by the following cast members: Elizabeth Paynter, John Barclay, Martyn Green, Gregory Stroud, Sydney Granville, and Joy Fenten; additionally, all thirteen images which have retained their surrounding decorative mounts are signed by photographer Frederick William Daniels on the mount. A number of Daniels’ original prints are held in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery of London. The quality of the photography and the ensuing printwork is unsurpassed, forming one of the most impressive tributes to any film we have ever seen. Photographs are in excellent condition throughout; mounts which remain are generally Fine.
