One Million Years B.C. Ray Harryhausen Early T-Rex Test Model
One Million Years B.C. Ray Harryhausen Early T-Rex Test Model - Combine sex and prehistoric man and completely throw out any scientific time-table, and add Raquel Welch benig chased by a T-Rex dinosaur while wearing basically only a smile and you have a hit on your hands. No matter that these dinosaurs existed millions of years before the two-legged big busted, big hair types ruled the Earth. If it's good enough for the "Flintstones", it's good enough for "One Million Years B.C." (1966). And the box office proved it! Of course besides Welch's obvious attributes, what made this a major success was the genius of special effects wizard Ray Harryhausen, using his stop-motion Dynamation. Having created some of the greatest creatures in fantasy/sci-fi film history he took to this assignment with great glee, since he always had a special fascination for dinosaurs, especially the T-Rex and the Triceratops. He was forever working out storyboards having a battle between these two, since he felt they were the perfect two to fight each other. He was so happy with the result in this film that he utilized the exact same models and even some of the same footage for his "Valley of Gwangi" three years later, where dinosaurs battle with cowboys of the old West! Harryhausen always went to great pains to create just the right looking T-Rex. Many drawings, and 3-D modeling was created before a final maquette was approved, and used to build his armature creatures for his special effects technique. This is an early example of his 3-D modeling for the T-Rex. Unlike many early modeling or maquettes, it is purposely made to be very pliable, so he could experiment with the many movements the final version would take, especially in the battle scenes. This early Harryhausen T-Rex model comes from legendary Jerry Neeley's collection. Neeley was the well known film historian, writer, collector and owner of the famous "Jerry's Video" in Los Feliz, CA. Customers, collectors and throngs of directors, writers and industry people would come from around the world to talk to Jerry, whose knowledge and memory of film, especially when it came to Sci-Fi, was encyclopedic, and also to visit his famous collection. Also included is a Letter of Provenience from Jerry Neeley's widow and co-owner of his various video and memorabilia shops. The T-Rex model is approx 14" long.
