On Trial (Warner Brothers, 1928). Lobby Card Set of 8 (11" X 14"). Prolific director Archie Mayo helmed this second of three Hollywood adaptations of the Elmer Rice play. Mayo consistently made successful films -- if not exactly classic -- like "Night After Night," "Gambling Lady" and the Marx Brothers' "A Night at the Opera." His reputation as a tyrant on the set eventually led to a self-imposed exile in the late 1940s, but he left behind a body of work that numbered 77 films, mostly features, in 30 years. Mayo made this film in one of his busiest years; in 1928 he directed five feature-lengths for Warner Brothers, none of which survive in their entirety today. These lobby cards represent a rare historical artifact, then, of the pre-James Brown hardest-working man in show business. The title card has slight toning, a dirt smudge and a crease mark. One card has a crease mark in the lower-left, while another has abrasions in the image. Otherwise, only a tiny pinhole at the top and bottom of each card lessens the incredible condition of these very handsome cards. Very Fine/Near Mint.
