On The Road (1994) Rare Unproduced Screenplay From Francis Ford Coppola
On The Road (1994) Rare Unproduced Screenplay From Francis Ford Coppola - There are a hand-full of classic novels that are totally beloved, and yet, feared by the reader, that someday someone will make a movie from them, ruining then forever. One of these feared encounters has always been Jack Kerouac's "On The Road". This rambling bohemian beat-generation anthem has more to do with words and rhythm than anything that could be visualized or filmed. Francis Ford Coppola bought the rights years ago, and tried several times to make the film. In 1994 with a screenplay by Barry Gifford he came close, but it wasn't until 2012 that he actually was able to make the film with a new writer and director. And as feared, it had no resemblance to the book, and went away quietly and quickly. This is the rare screenplay of the 1994 version, which many believe, if produced, may actually had worked. It comes from American Zoetrope (Coppola's Studio), with "CONFIDENTIAL" written in bold letters on the title page. It was not ever meant for public consumption. The script was sent to cult actor and rocker Richard Edson to see if he'd be interested in being in the film. He did, but alas, the film was never produced. This comes from his personal collection. A true treasure of movie history.
