On Seldom-Seen Laid Paper.
Red Maltese cross of (5th Corps, 1st Division, Army of Potomac) on unusually high quality, pale ivory laid cover. Scott #65, judged rose pink, with four-slice pie fancy, and very light Washington, D.C. c.d.s., June 30. To "Mrs. Elisebeath A. Sergent, Union Valley, Cortland Co., N.Y." The V Corps boasted a series of top commanders, including Banks, Porter, Hooker, Butterfield, Meade, Sykes at Gettysburg, et al. Edge wear, some soiling, several perfs trimmed where cover opened at right, else satisfactory. A seldom-seen paper stock for a patriotic, suggesting this was privately printed. Old pencil on verso, "Sold in Walcott 1934 Sale for $4.00." A Pvt. John Sergent of Taylor, N.Y. - neighboring Union Valley - served in the 10th N.Y. Cavalry, wounded at Richmond.
