Auction Date:2009 Jun 24 @ 10:00 (UTC-04:00 : AST/EDT)
Location:6270 Este Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45232, United States
two-color partially printed document appointing Zhinga-ga-hega (Little Chief) a member of the Omaha Indian Police, 5 Feb. 1870, signed by E. Painter, Agent. With wax seal and red, white and blue ribbon streamers. Framed, 7.5" x 9.5" visible.

The lot includes two pages (photocopied) of research by the consignor. He notes that Edward Painter was a doctor from Baltimore, a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers) who had deep nonviolent convictions. He gave up a lucrative medical practice to accept the appointment to the Omaha reservation in 1869, where he served until 1873. Painter's daughter, Emilie, met William Henry Jackson in 1871 after Jackson's wife had died, and they were married in Cincinnati, OH, 8 Oct. 1873, while Jackson was still the official photographer of the Hayden survey.

Little information is available on Zhinga-ga-hega. [On the 1865 treaty by which the Omaha "ceded" a large tract of land it is rendered "Ga-he-ga-zhinga." (Oklahoma State University Library). Similarly on an 1854 treaty "Gah-he-ga-gin-gah." (firstpeoples.us)]

Condition: Some toning of white ribbon and darkening where ribbon attached. Generally in very good condition.
