This is an excellent carved Jade or Jadeite mask believed to be from the Olmec People. The piece was made by a highly skilled artisan showing a very smooth detail carved area and wonderful symmetry across the entire face. The Olmec people are considered to be one of the earliest greatest civilizations in Mesoamerica. The Olmec culture developed in the centuries before 1200BC (BCE), and declined around 400BC. The Olmecs were before the Mayans and Aztecs and were true artisans and masters of both colossal stone carvings and Jade Masks. Olmec artworks are considered among ancient America's most striking. The piece shows solid Jade with rich dark to light green coloring with semi-transparent areas. The piece is believed to be correct and truly a rare size Olmec Mesoamerica Pre-Columbian ancient artifact. Shows very good museum quality condition for its age. Measures 8 7/8”W x 9”H. The piece shows two ¼” round holes with the correct early drill marks. Truly and exceptional important piece. Please review the pictures for age and description correctness.
