Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Connecticut who commanded troops in the defense of New York during the American Revolution (1726–1797). Partly-printed DS, one page, 13 x 7.75, May 17, 1797. As governor of Connecticut, Wolcott appoints Ebenezer Lindsley, Jr., as “Captain of the First Troop in the Second Regiment of Cavalry of this State.” Boldly signed at the conclusion by Wolcott and countersigned by Samuel Wyllys as secretary. The embossed paper seal affixed to the left side remains mostly intact. In very good condition, with three vertical folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), and scattered toning and soiling. Accompanied by an unsigned engraved portrait.
