ALS signed “Oliv. Wolcott,” one page both sides, 8 x 10, October 4, 1797. Handwritten letter to James W. Henry, in part: "I have rec'd your favour of the 2nd instant—it was to be sure an odd thing that Cap'n Grier should suffer himself to be embargoed by the Spanish officer & should afterwards give a kind of parole—all these things prove however that we are not a rash people…we have prudently renounced the old way of serving the Devil by quarrelling & fighting—as Secretary of the Treasury, I approve of this mightily—it is certainly the best for the finances. You will however by Hook or by Crook get the Spanish Ports…A striking interposition of providence to mortify the pride of man has occurred at Boston. I have no doubt but the Frigate would have gone off if such a disappointment had not been necessary to convince the people of that Town, that they are finite & dependent beings." In very good to fine condition, with scattered staining, and small areas of paper loss.
