1802 Oliver Wolcott, Jr. Autograph Letter Signed “Oliver Wolcott”. One page, 8” x 10”, Litchfield Connecticut , April 13, 1802, in ink, to James Watson, New York. This letter was written shortly after Oliver Wolcott, Jr. (1760-1833) resigned as Secretary of the Treasury and before he went into private business in New York. This letter speaks to the political machinations rife in Connecticut during the period. In 1801, 1802, and 1803 the Republicans ran Ephraim Kirby as their candidate for governor. Although he had no expectation of winning, his candidacy posed the first organized threat to Federalist dominance of that office. The letter reads in part: “Yesterday we defeated the whole force of Gov. Kirby in a general election.” The letter also points out how politics has changed very little in 200 years: “…pay attention to the Leaders of the Democrats - They have raised themselves by lying - let us pull them down by telling the Truth.” Wolcott himself later served ten years as Governor of Connecticut. The letter displays the usual fold creases, with small areas of separation in the folds. The verso with integral address cover shows some areas of paper loss and mounting remnants, else very good condition. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
