Item Overview Description: Title: Soundings from the Atlantic Author: Oliver Wendell Holmes - Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. was an American physician, poet, and polymath based in Boston. A member of the Fireside Poets, he was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. His most famous prose works are the "Breakfast-Table" series, which began with "The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table" (1858). In addition to his work as an author and poet, Holmes also served as a physician, professor, lecturer, and inventor, and although he never practiced it, he received formal training in law. [Courtesy Wikipedia] Publisher: Ticknor and Fields City: Boston Year: 1864 Binding Style: Hardcover Pagination: 468 pages + 21 pages Width: 5" Height: 7.5" Book Details: This title is bound by maroon cloth-covered boards with the title emblazoned in gilt letters on the spine. The text itself, "Soundings from the Atlantic" compiles several articles by Oliver Wendell Holmes, one of the most prominent American writers of the 19th century. Many of these articles appeared in "The Atlantic Monthly," a magazine Holmes named himself which exists to this day. A selection of featured articles includes: "Bread and the Newspapers," which "captured the anxious mood on the home front" during the Civil War; "My Hunt After 'The Captain,'" in which Holmes recounts his "frantic search for his wounded son, who lived to become a Supreme Court justice"; and "The STereoscope and the Stereograph" in which Holmes argues "Form is henceforth divorced from matter. In fact, matter as a visible object is of no great use any longer, except as the mould on which form is shaped. Give us a few negatives of a thing worth seeing, taken from different points of view, and that is all we want of it." [All quotations courtesy "The Atlantic"] Condition / Notes: The boards of this text display mild to moderate signs of rubbing and shelfwear along with some significant toning, mostly on the spine cover. There are partial cracks to the back and front hinges. The binding is weak in a few places though otherwise intact. A lithograph of Oliver Wendell Holmes from another volume is laid-in. The pages display some typical indications of age toning though the text and illustrations remain clear and legible throughout the book. - 10398-050518-IN-02150
