Oliver Wendell Holmes. A.L.S. of the el
Oliver Wendell Holmes. A.L.S. of the elder Holmes, 296 Beacon St. (Boston), Oct. 23, 1871, 2 -1/2 pp., to Mrs. Fox. "The last time I saw Katy (Lynch that was) she called on me dressed mightily fine with another lady of imposing exterior, and told me that her husband was keeping a commercial establishment which by her description I supposed to be what is commonly called a grog-shop. Katy however, talked virtuously and philosophically and gave me a good account, as I remember, of 'Johnny' and her sister, who is in a convent. I should have preferred another line of commerce for Mr. Katie, whatever his name is, Smith or other, but I did not think it my business to meddle with the one-armed defender of the country, and should hardly have dared to attack two such gorgeous females as Mrs. K and her companion. I have always taken an interest in the family ever since the poor old drunken mother died and should very like to hear from them if they were in trouble. Very truly yours, O.W. Holmes." An American man of letters, essayist, poet, novelist, professor of anatomy at Harvard Medical School, biographer, best known for The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table and other works. His wry sense of humor is displayed in this letter. Very fine.
