Oliver Hazard Perry Autograph Letter Signed "O. H. Perry" just days after America declares war on Great Britain. One page, 7.5" x 10", Newport [RI], July 15, 1812. In part: "Herewith, I enclose, Evan Jenkins Boatswain's account with the United States Schooner Revenge. Respectfully Sir, I have the honor to be Your Obdt. Servant". The armed Schooner Revenge was Perry's first commission in 1809. In 1811 it was shipwrecked through no fault of Perry's ability to command it. Just one year later (July 1813) he was ordered to create and command the American Fleet on Lake Erie. With his motto flag "Don't Give Up the Ship" he crushed the British and effected a surrender in just two months when he sent the message "We have met the enemy and they are ours." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
