Third chief justice of the United States (1745–1807) and delegate to the Constitutional Congress who later submitted the amendments which became the Bill of Rights. Revolutionary War–dated manuscript DS, signed “Oliv’r Ellsworth,” one page, 7.75 x 6, September 10, 1775. Pay order addressed to Treasurer John Lawrence. In part: “Pay to Nathaniel Shaw Mercht the Sum of Two thousand pounds money in Bills, for supply of Militia of stores for use of the Colony.” Signed at the conclusion by Oliver Ellsworth and Thomas Seymour. Expertly mounted, double-matted, and framed with a plaque and an engraved portrait to an overall size of 13.75 x 26.75. In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), a few edge chips, and some show-through from docketing to reverse.
