Third Chief Justice of the United States and delegate to the Constitutional Congress (1777–84) who later submitted the amendments which became the Bill of Rights. As a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, Ellsworth was one of the five men who supervised Connecticut’s war expenditures. Partly printed Revolutionary War dated DS, signed “O. Ellsworth,” one page, 8.75 x 13.5, June 20, 1776. A contract involving the enlistment of soldiers. In part: “Edward Russell & William Douglas, both of Branford in New Haven County are holden and firmly bound unto the Governor and Company of the English Colony of Connecticut, in New-England, in the Sum of Three Thousand Pounds…to be paid to said Governor and Company…. The Condition of the above Obligation is such, That whereas the above bounden Edward Russell is appointed Pay-Master to his own Company, not to be raised, to join the Continental Army in New York. Now, if the said Edward shall faithfully and justly dispose of all the Monies he shall receive out of the public Treasury, for the Purpose of inlisting the Soldiers in, and Paying said Company, and shall account with the Committee of the Pay-Table for the same, when thereto required, the above Obligation to be Void, otherwise to remain in full Force…” The document has been countersigned by both Russell and Douglas. Framed to an overall size of 12.5 x 17. In very good condition, with short partial separations and toning along horizontal folds (not affecting signatures) scattered mild wrinkling and toning. An impressive document with great Revolutionary War content.
