Third Chief Justice of the United States and delegate to the Constitutional Congress (1777–84) who later submitted the amendments which became the Bill of Rights. As a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, Ellsworth was one of the five men who supervised Connecticut’s war expenditures. Revolutionary War-dated manuscript DS, signed “O. Ellsworth,” one page, 8.25 x 4, July 3, 1776. Ellsworth directs the Treasurer to pay “Jonathan Gilbert Thirty four Shillings…for Purchase & Premium on 5lb Salt Peter & charge the Colony.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and a bit of scattered light toning. A day later, the Declaration of Independence would be adopted by the Continental Congress.
