English soldier and statesman (1599–1658) who led Parliamentary forces in the English Civil War, waged war against Scotland and Ireland and, in 1653, following the execution of Charles I, became Lord Protector of Great Britain, a position he held until his death in 1658. After a yearlong reign by his son, Richard, the British throne was restored (to Charles II) and Cromwell's body was exhumed and posthumously 'executed.' Vellum manuscript DS, signed “O. Cromwell,” one page, 11 x 7.5, August 9, 1650. As Lieutenant General of Ireland and Captain General of the Parliamentary Forces, Cromwell appoints William Morris a Lieutenant of the Commonwealth Army three weeks after the Battle of Inverkeithing and three weeks before the Battle of Dunbar. Double-matted and framed with an engraved portrait to an overall size of 22.75 x 14. In fine condition, with slight fading to the signature. This type of military commission from the time period and containing the scarce form of Oliver’s signature (with his name only and his title absent) is virtually unobtainable and highly desirable.
