Featured in this lot is this beautiful Old Pawn Navajo Petit Point Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and Sterling Silver Brooch Pendant with the artist's name stamped on the reverse, "Sterling C. Begay", circa 1950. Petit point and cluster stone work originate from the Zuni people, though other tribes have also adopted the style. Petit point and needlepoint are two types of Zuni clusterwork and can be distinguished by the shape and size of the gemstones. Petit point refers to gems cut into round, oval, rectangle, pear, or square shapes, while needlepoint refers to gems that have been cut into a thin sliver or needle shape.
This oval brooch pendant features delicate round and tear drop Petit Point turquoise stones which combine to form various rows inside a scalloped edged sterling silver dots frame, a slender Needlepoint turquoise stone centered amidst four separate rows of turquoise stones, separated by multiple sterling silver braided rope trim. Each stone is set in a sawtooth sterling silver bezel, the center of the cuff comprising stones forming a two lovely rosettes accented by appliqued sterling silver arrow heads, two crescent shaped set of teardrop stones flanking the arrow heads and a sterling silver braided rope pattern surrounding the center stone as well. This Old Pawn Petit Point and Needlepoint Turquoise Sterling Silver Brooch Pendant is in very fine condition, a consistent rich patina is exhibited throughout. No obvious marring noted, measures 2"W x 3"L approximately. Total weight of 22.3 grams.
