A rare French 18th century cup and saucer in the cornflower pattern. Ca 1780's. The cup with the factory mark of Andre Marie Leboeuf, Rue Thiroux, Paris, France circa 1785-1790. And the saucer marked by the Nast factory. Theses pieces are a marriage but they are in the same pattern, date from the same period and are pieces of porcelain from two of the greatest late 18th century porcelain factory's in Paris, France. The Rue Thiroux factory was at the time under the patronage of Queen Marie Antoinette following an altercation between Leboeuf and the celebrated Sevres factory who resented the production of this exquisite porcelain which rivaled their own. The Queen encouraged Leboeuf in the production of fine porcelain by ordering china for her dairy at Versailles and as presents for favored friends. Subsequently, Leboeuf's china became known as "Porcelaine de la Reine". The tray which bears the mark granted to the factory being a capital "A" beneath the Queen's crown in red. The colors are as fresh and vibrant as the day it was made. The red painted mark is worn on the base, but is quite discernable. As of 1770, a large number of porcelain factories were set up in the capital. In order to avoid the royal privileges that banned production outside the Royal Manufactories (Sèvres, Vincennes, etc) and to have the right to produce, factories placed themselves under the protection of leading personalities (Comte de Provence, Comte d?Artois, Duc d?Orléans, and others).
