Indonesian painting has an ancient tradition going back to the empire of Mcjapahit – to about late 13th century with Bali. There, Kamasan was the center beginning with the 16th cent. Then, somewhat later, Ubud and Batuan joined – two neighboring provinces. The painting is demotic and full of fantasy, life force and joy in the pleasures that diverse festivities offer. But also very fascinating through the belief in the omnipotence of demons in the jungle, which is reflected in the exciting, expressive composition of corresponding figures and masks in their colorful savagery. Also in Sanur an artists´group formed – less concerned with religious themes as with wild (oceanic) animals, erotic and dance scenes in emphasized, rhythmic rendition. After the war, a Dutch soldier named Arie Smit, who decided to stay in Bali, founded an artists´group in Penestanan. In 1970, around 300 “provincial painters“ were reportedly active. All offered paintings here were acquired by a German family, who resided in Indonesia in the 1970´s.

Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms listed below and all other terms announced at the time of sale. For your satisfaction: We offer an Appraisal by GLA or CRG laboratory in Los Angeles California on Silver, Gold , Platinum items as well as Loose Gemstones and Fine Watches (A Complete & Detailed Evaluation for a reduced rate of 50% off) ***We do not allow Picking-up of Merchandise due to the security nature of our business and our Fine Art & Jewelers Block Insurance which does not allow an open to the public business structure. In exceptional cases we may approve a pick-up of merchandise after reviewing the shipping companies credentials and review of the official Estimate/Quote on Shippers Letterhead. We have No RETURN/EXCHANGE/CREDIT policies available (under certain very restrictive situations you may request permission from management. All sales are final. There are no cancellations, returns or refunds. Under certain circumstances, we may make an exception and allow a cancellation, re-listing, return, merchandise exchange or approve a bidding credit at our discretion.
