For your consideration is this circa early 1900 curve-back hickory chair, made by Old Hickory Co., Martinsville,IN. As the pioneers moved West in the 1800's, they discovered the durability, usefulness, and abundance of the Hickory tree in the Midwest, particularly in Indiana. It wasn't long before furniture builders started crafting furniture from hickory. It is said that a forbearer of the Old Hickory Chair Company made hickory chairs and rockers for President Andrew Jackson's home, the Hermitage. Once Old Hickory Chair Company incorporated in 1899, they were ready with a full line of products to ship. In 1904 the company shipped dining room chairs to the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park. Those chairs are still in use today at the Inn. This chair features solid wood construction, including hickory legs and back. The chair is very solid and comfortable and has a nice rustic look to it. This example shows a very unique curved or bent back with stripped hickory wood and barked hickory wood having an added flair with the cutout accents for arms. The chair measures 25 1/2" wide x 20 1/2" deep x 29 3/4" tall.
