Old Babylonian, c.1800 BC. A dark green serpe...
Old Babylonian, c.1800 BC. A dark green serpentine amulet depicting the goddess Lamashtu, who was an evil demon who devoured unborn and new born children. She had a hairy body, a lioness' head with donkey's teeth and ears, long fingers and fingernails and the feet of a bird with sharp talons. She is shown standing or kneeling on a donkey, nursing a pig and a dog, and holding snakes. Pregnant women often wore amulets of Pazuzu, the demon who fought against Lamashtu. The bottom half of the piece is missing and inscription is probably for protection or a magical formula, as the writing is hard to decipher. A rare and very nice piece. Dimensions: 5x4.5cm. See Gluck 'The world of Persian Pottery', no. 95. $500
