Oil on linen, seated half portrait of young woman in white dress, elbow on marble-top stand, said to be Anne Elizabeth Stuart Nelson, wife of Thomas A.R. Nelson, Jonesboro, Tennessee, attributed to Samuel Shaver, Knoxville, Tennessee, 1816-1878, lined with wax and linen, contemporary giltwood frame, 28 x 27 in., accompanied by book "Thomas A.R. Nelson of East Tennessee" by Thomas B. Alexander, Tennessee Historical Commission, Nashville, 1956, see page 19 for similar portraits, accompanied by description of painting in the Tennessee State Museum of Mrs. T.A.R. Nelson and her children, possibly related to present painting, other notes about painting by Beverly Burbage. Retouch/repaint approximately 25 percent, some repainting in areas of draw crackle, some overglazing in face, dress and background. Provenance: Burbage Collection.
