Attributed to Taber Sears (American 1870 - 1950). Studied at the Boston Museum Fine Arts School and Julian Academy in Paris and later studied in Florence and Rome. Sears is more widely recognized for his watercolors and mural works. This piece draws close resemblance to a few of Sears' Maine and Massachusetts coastal scenes (hence the attribution). It is housed in it's original frame with a Jordan Marsh label on the reverse of the frame. (Jordan Marsh of Federated Department stores and now Macy's was established in Boston in 1841). It's not out of the question that this peice was purchased at the Jordan Marsh department store in Boston. As evidenced by the dome and sturcture of the lighthouse, we are of the opinion that this is perhaps the artists rendition of Minot Ledge Lighthouse in Cohasset Massachusetts. There exists a very small patch to the rear. There has been no in painting. Signed and dated "Sears '01" lower right. In its original carved giltwood frame which is also in great shape. Measures 24 1/2' wide by 18 high Canvas measures 17 1/2" by 11 1/5". A great litte piece of marine art by a listed artist.
