Oil Painting Depicting the Civil War Battle of Cherbourg, the Meeting of the Confederate Raider Alabama and the USS Kearsarge

Rendered in oil on canvas by an unknown artist, 11 inches tall, 18 1/4 inches wide, and set into a 1 1/2 inch wide hardwood frame with a gold painted floral veneer. In the foreground is the CSS Alabama, a British-built and Confederate-operated commerce raider, which had spent the better part of 2 years capturing and burning Union vessels. In the back right is the USS Kearsarge, which had been in pursuit of Alabama virtually the whole time. On June 19, 1864, Kearsarge finally had the Alabama pinned down in the French port of Cherbourg, where they had sought repair and refit. Raphael Semmes, Captain of the Alabama, decided to take his chances on a fight, not knowing that his enemy was armored. Departing French waters, the battle was joined; though Alabama kept up a superior rate of fire they were unable to inflict significant damage on Kearsarge, with the lion's share of their shots going wide, 2 striking the armor, and an explosive shell failing to detonate on the sternpost. Captain John Winslow of the Kearsarge had his gunners take their time, and in the process inflicting fatal shots below the waterline on Alabama, sinking the ship.
