lot of 3. A renowned figure during the Revolutionary War, Gen. Israel Putnam is best remembered for his courage at Bunker Hill, where he was reported to have given the order to his troops "Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes." After suffering a stroke in 1779, Putnam's career was ended, and he died at his home in Brooklyn, Conn., eleven years later. Although Putnam never traveled to the western parts of the new nation, several of his sons relocated to Ohio in the 1790s (Putnam County is named in his honor) and became successful in their own right, and his cousin Rufus Putnam helped establish the town of Marietta, the first permanent white settlement in the region. Israel Putnam, Jr., himself a noted military man with the rank of Colonel, settled in Belpre (Washington County), Ohio, with his wife Sarah.

The lot includes three documents relating to the Putnams: Col. Israel Putnam's will, June 17, 1802, and a receipt for manufacture of his coffin, March 1812, along with a carbon copy of the will of Douglas Putnam (Col. Israel's grandson), 1892.

A fine set of documents from early Ohio, relating to a renowned family.

Descended Directly in the Putnam-Hildreth Families of Marietta, Ohio

Condition: Generally good condition with expected signs of age.
