4pp. letter from a civilian in Woodbury, Ohio, to an unidentified Union soldier. Dated 20 September 1863, letter reads in part: ''…Montgomery is dead. He died at Camp Chase. Morton Norton is dead. They brought him home last Thursday and buried him on Friday. Jacob Sulinger is very low…dead before this. The sore throat is very bad. There has been no draft here yet. The day was set and all was ready and they put it off I can't tell the reason. Mare is to be also drafted in this Co about 10 or 12 in this township. I suppose it will be put off til after the election. I hope that it will not be long too the war will be over and the boys have come home. Thare was a democrat meting in Wooster the 11 of this month. I never saw as many people in Wooster as was thare that day. They got the wagons all in one procession and it would have made a string 7 miles long. John Starn has got home. He is sick he has the dysentary. Riley Mourey is at home. He is discharged. His speach is no beter. Their is preachen to night. I wish you was hear to go. A long man has gone to ring the bell. May god protect your life and health so you may return safe is my prayer…'' Letter measures 5'' x 8''. Near fine condition.
