<B>Ogoni (Nigeria)</B></I><BR>Mask, <I>Elu</B></I><BR>Wood, pigment, fiber<BR>Height: 7 inches Width: 4 7/8 inches Depth: 4 inches<BR><BR>This small face mask has a hinged jaw typical of Ogoni work, usually with thin cane or bamboo teeth (visible in the open mouth of the next lot). The face has small features including a <I>retroussé</B></I> nose, tab ears, and a small mouth (when closed, but very large when open). This mask has lost virtually all its pigment, apart from some on the hair.<BR><BR><I>Elu</B></I> (spirit) masks, normally beneficent spirits, either male of female, performed in one of a number of plays or entertainments at New Yam festivals or Christmas.<BR><BR>The mask is covered with a heavy smoke patination. There is insect loss on the proper left cheek, and left ear is abraded.<BR><BR>Provenance: H.
