<B>Officers Blair, Wilson, and Garfield <I>Cartes de Visite</B></I>.</B></I> This lot includes three exquisite CDVs of Union officers: Francis "Frank" Blair, Henry Wilson, and James Garfield. The first photograph features Frank Blair. Blair took the initiative when South Carolina seceded to insure that Missouri would not fall to the same fate. He equipped 1000 men from the "Wide Awakes" and kept them ready in case of emergency. As the war moved forward, he was made Major General of the 1st brigade which was made of units from all over the Midwest. Eventually, he would go on to serve with William T. Sherman in several campaigns in Georgia and the Carolinas. After the war, opposing the Congressional Reconstruction Policy, he left the Republican Party outright and would run for Vice President in 1868 along with Horatio Seymour. He is shown here seated, wearing his Union officer's coat with two stars on the sleeve. In very fine condition; pencil notations on recto; bears the C.D. Fredericks imprint on recto and verso; a few minor blemishes in the emulsion; single line black border; square corners. <BR><BR>The second photograph features Henry Wilson. Wilson was Grant's Vice President, but before this he raised and commanded the Twenty-Second Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteers. Shown here in full uniform holding his sword and cap in each hand. A handsome image of a man who would serve Grant in every capacity for many years. In very fine condition; Brady imprint on recto; pencil notations on verso; no border; square corners; light yellowing of the emulsion. <BR><BR>The third image is of none other than James Garfield. Before he was a political fixture, Garfield commanded the 42nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served many notable generals including Buell and Rosecrans. He would later go on to become the 20th President of the United States and the second one to be assassinated.
