Oct. 3 1857 - Central America Steamship Wreck Articles :
An original Harpers Weekly: Journal of Civilization. This was the most popular illustrated American political newspaper in the 1800s. The front page begins with a very descriptive narrative of an on-board passenger during a ship wreck of "Central America". The second half of the front cover is an illustration of five men and a woman frantically swimming in the ocean in raging waters, under what appears to be rain and lightning. Illustration with text was a technique developed during the Civil War which allowed readers to see the scene. Reporters and artists were deployed to the battlefields where they would then witness and sketch scenes. Pages begin on 626 and end on 640. Newspaper is in excellent condition with minor tears along few page edges. Few stains along the fold of the paper, minor foxing, and no yellowing. Accompanied with it, is an additional newspaper article copy about the "Central America". It explains that over 400 lives had been lost after a leak in the steamer. Many people died because of exhaustion because they could no longer swim, most were taken over by the large waves. Only about 95 passengers were able to be saved.
