Oceanic Solomon Islands
House Post
Wood, pigment, shell
Height: 109 ¾ inches Width: 9 5/8 inches Depth: 9 inches

On several islands in the Solomons "posts carved in the form of anthropomorphic figures supported the roofs of canoe houses and feast houses … Figures depicted on the posts represented various mythological beings or persons involved in specific historical events" (Deborah Waite. Art of the Solomon Islands from the Collection of the Barbier-Müller Museum. Geneva: Musée Barbier-Müller, 1983, p.129). A number of known house posts show women with a child, even though Waite says it is relatively infrequent (loc. cit.). This example is unusual in preserving extensive original paint, which probably represents body painting (see photograph, op. cit., p.42). The wood has various crack systems and there is some insect damage and light abrasion of paint surfaces.

Provenance:
Kevin Conru, Brussels
Gary Hendershott, Little Rock

Shipping: Large Collectibles (view shipping information)
