In modern times, mint errors are rare, and error coins such as the 1955 double die wheat penny command a high premium. Mint errors were not uncommon in ancient times. So error coins are not necessarily rare or even more valuable. Here, however, is what is known as a "mule" coin, that is, one on which the obverse carries the reverse of an entirely different ruler on its back (imagine an Indian head penny with the reverse of a wheat cent). The obverse of this coin depicts Severus Alexander, but the reverse reads IOVI CONSERVATORI ("for Jupiter, protector of the emperors"), a type which did not make its debut until the reign of Licinius I, who ruled nearly one century later. These types of "errors" are unusual, but not unheard of. $50 reserve JC-30101-12
