Objects. Hand-bell with the Arms of the Gagiona family of Verona. Verona, 1587. D/ Hand-bell decorated with four bands of ornaments. Each band separated with twin horizzontal lines in relief. The first band at the top and the last on the edge decorated with foliate scrolls. The second band depicting harpies between scrolls pattern. The central band depicting arms of Gagiona family (foliate pineapple with long stalk, above eight-ray star). The handle with two bands of decoration, one with harpies, the other with foliate scrolls. The knob with foliate decoration. Inside a foundry mark with the initials LCVF and the date 1587. Cast bell-metal alloy (tin and copper). 15.6 cm high, 9.5 cm high without handle, 10.25 diameter. Inc. Giovanni de Levis. In very fine condition. The de Levis workshop was established by Giovanni and his brother Santo in Verona; Giovanni's nephews (Servo, Giovan Battista and Ottavio) started to work in this family business in 1576. Giovanni was the leading figure. Between 1580 and 1590 he created several hand-bells for italian families and sanctuaries. There are four known bells made for the Gagiona family: one, dated circa 1590, in a private collection in Hannover (Avery, 1981, p. 50); one in Virginia Museum, Richmond (Avery, 1992, pp. 47 s.); one, dated 1582, in Victoria and Albert Museum (A.16-1973), and this one offered for sale. Giovanni signed his earliest works IDL, the bell offered for sale as the one in Virginia Museum are signed LCVF (perhaps 'Levis Compagnia Fecit Veronae').
