Locomotive sits idle on the Union Timber Co. Spur of the Northern Pacific. Photograph measures 8 1/2”x 6 1/2”, black single matte 12”x10 1/4”, medium contrast—suffers from some yellowing, and the focus is sharp. The corners of the matte are worn and there is a stain on the middle left of the matte. Photographer identified as Nelson. Loggers and railroad men pose in this photo. There are three tracks crowded with flat cars, some are loaded and others are empty. Etched on the photo is “Union Timber Co. Spur U.P., Near Oakville, Wa.” Oakville is located southwest of Olympia, between Gate City and Gibson Creek. The Northern Pacific Tacoma Division states, “It was named by the Tacoma, Olympia and Chehalis Valley Railroad Company workers for the…Garry Oak, in the area. The town…enjoyed a short lived boom in the early 1920s as a boarding house community for railroad construction workers and was subsequently a major collection point for cascara bark. The town is located just north of the Chehalis Indian Reservation and the plat of the town site was filed on September 27, 1887. The post office opened on December 31, 1873. The town served as the connecting point for the likes of: the Chehalis River Logging Company, the Ferndale Lumber Company, the Krumm and Sinnestad Logging Company, the James E Murray, the Olson Brothers Lumber Company and the Union Timber Company.” No. 10
