American manufacturer, railroad promoter, and congressman known as a principal in the Credit Mobiler scandal (1804–1873). Very rare original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait by Alexander Gardner of Washington, boldly signed in the lower border in black ink. Overall speckling to the image, otherwise fine condition. An extremely scarce signed photo of the man credited by as being the single most important influence in the building of the Union Pacific portion of the transcontinental railroad.
