OUTSTANDING ROBERT E. LEE OIL PAINTING. Oil on canvas, signed lower right "L.T. Si___ '17; framed. A fine painting based upon the full-length photograph of Lee taken by Julian Vannerson of Richmond, Virginia early in 1864. Taken at the behest of several ladies of Richmond, the Vannerson "Blockade" portraits were initially meant to be used as studies for a statue to be made by Edward V. Valentine. A number of negatives were supposed to have been exposed, though images from only four are known to have survived. While clearly based on Vannerson's full-length negative, the artist has shown Lee with a less time-worn face. A wonderful portrait. Canvas fine, with one old professional repaired vertical tear immediately to the right of his sash in the dark area between his body and elbow.
