OUTSTANDING CARVED AND PAINTED WARD BROS. MALLARD DECOY FROM CRISFIELD, MARYLAND.
OUTSTANDING CARVED AND PAINTED WARD BROS. MALLARD DECOY FROM CRISFIELD, MARYLAND. The Ward Brothers were two simple and charming country characters from Crisfield, MD. They began carving in the first quarter of the 20th C. and continued to carve and paint until their death in the late 20th C. They are probably two of the most famous decoy carvers in the world. A museum is named for them and an international carving competition that takes place in Maryland carries their name. Their hunting decoys are highly sought after by sportsmen from all over North America and their decorative decoys are equally in demand. This is an example of their decorative work. Its head is turned at a lifelike 45-degree angle. Its form and paint patternation clearly indicates why they became so extremely popular. This is signed and dated by "1971 L.T. Ward Brothers, Crisfield, Maryland. Len Ward, Steve Ward". This was a decorative bird and meant to ornament a mantelpiece. SIZE: 18" l. CONDITION: Some paint shrinkage at the left side of the breast, otherwise original and generally excellent. 9-92385
