OUTSTANDING AMERICAN MOURNING SAMPLER. This sampler appears to have been made by the mother of Sarah (see Lot 723). It is an excellent example of an American mourning sampler with 2 grieving women at grave with weeping willow and "In Remembrance" below. Above is a list of her 5 dead children with birth dates, including Sarah, and "The Children of James and Hannah Wilshaw." This piece is 13" x 13.5," in period frame. Undoubtedly these children were all taken in one of the many epidemics of the 1850's in America. Evenly toned with tiny holes at margins, where tacked to linen border. PLEASE NOTE: THIS LOT WILL BE SOLD ON EBAY LIVE AUCTIONS BETWEEN 2:00-3:00 PM EDT ON MAY 25, 2002. REGISTER NOW TO BID LIVE ONLINE THE DAY OF THE SALE! (EST 800-1000)
