OTTOMAN: Mustafa II Ibn Mehmed (1695-1703), gold ashrafi (3.41g), Urdu-i Humayun (imperial army) mint, AH 1106. OC 22-024-00 (RRR), Wilkes-3251. Choice fine to very fine. Extremely rare.
The extremely rare mint of Urdu-I Humayun translates into "imperial army", and it refers to a mobile mint that accompanied the Ottoman army during war time. The last specimen we were able to locate sold in 2012, was both pierced and scratched on both sides, less attractive condition, sold in SARC auction 14 (lot 509) for $1652. An earlier specimen in similar condition and, like the current one, unscratched and unpierced, sold in Fritz Rudolf Kunker's auction 210 (lot 943) for around $3730.
