OTTOMAN EMPIRE: Mehmet II, 1451-1481, AR 10 akçes (8.74g), Kostantiniye, AH(8)75, A-1307, NP-82, Very Fine, RRR. This coin represents the first attempt by the Ottomans to introduce a large-size silver coin for regular circulation, but the project was very quickly abandoned. The next attempt occurred during the reign of Süleyman I (AH926-974), who introduced silver "dirhems" at Syrian & Iraqi mints, in the range of 3.0-4.5 grams. No large silver coinage was struck at Kostantiniye until Süleyman II, dated AH1099, thus more than two centuries later.
