(29.8 x 38.7 cm) 1953 PROVENANCE Manfred Heiting Private Collection, NEW YORK LITERATURE Ute Eskildsen, DER FOTOGRAF OTTO STEINERT, Göttingen, 1999, p. 105 (illustrated) Trained as a doctor, Steinert later became a portrait photographer and began teaching photography at the Staatliche Schule für Kunst und Handwerk in Saarbrücken in 1949. He was a founding member of the group "Fotoform" that same year. In 1951, he organized the first "Subjektive Fotografie" exhibition and became director of the Staatliche Schule the next year. Steinert moved to Essen in 1959, where he became head of the Werkgruppe Fotografie in the Folkwangschule für Gestaltung. Aside from his teaching, he organized photography exhibitions and created a photographic collection for the city of Essen that is today at the Museum Folkwang. The minimal photograph of electrical wires (Lot 101) demonstrates Steinert's interest in bold, graphic abstractions. For Lot 102, Steinert vastly underexposed the negative and printed the sky black to create this stark composition.
