around 1921, oil on canvas, 49 x 56.5 cm, signed lower right Coubine, undated, framed in original period frame., Starting Price: CZK 180,000; USD 5,271; EUR 5,989 , Estimated price: (200,000 - 240,000) CZK., The authenticity of the work has been confirmed by Prof. PhDr. Frantisek Dvorak. Otakar Kubin lived from 1919 in Provence and it is quite possible that the pleasant mood and warm atmosphere of southern France filled with light and lavender scent contributed to a change in his artistic perception. From initial expressive fauvism of the Osma group period, Kubin was heading towards idyllic neo-classicism after World War I. Characteristic elements of the new style - calm moderate balance visible in harmonious colour composition could be traced in this picture. An old shepherd leaning against a strong stick is watching his herd grazing in a spring green grove. He seems satisfied and on a lovely day surrounded by his animals in leisurely passing the time, the scene evokes an image of typical bucolic landscape from Ancient times.
