This is a unique copy of a concealable belt pistol that was designed/ produced in late WWI that would have been issued to OSS and the British SOE agents that operated behind enemy lines. A "Belt Pistol" is pictured and briefly described in the book "The Visual Dictionary of Special Military Forces". Many of these types of weapons were retained by the OSS and later issued to the CIA agent and even some "Special Forces", that operated on a clandestine basis during the Cold War. The original weapon design was based on a highly modified and cut down Webley & Scott semi automatic pistol chambered for the small 25 ACP cartridge. The pistol itself retains the full length frame and has been fitted with a highly shortened slide and barrel that all fits inside a curved metal fixture (like a holster with the barrel pointing forward), which would have been positioned on the right side/hip area of a Secret Agent or spy. This metal holster was secured to the waist via a large canvas or web belt that ran around the waist and either his shirt or coat would cover the entire mechanism. The firing mechanism actually consists of a three foot long steel cable that was secured on one end to the face of the curved metal holster and into the trigger mechanism with the other end attached to a small concealable (pocket size) thumb actuated firing device. The idea being that if an agent was operating in the field and was discovered or confronted by the enemy, all the agent had to do was to turn and face his opponent (which pointed the pistol directly at the confronter) and slip his hand into his pants or coat pocket to actuate the firing mechanism. Assuming they had reasonable loose clothing you might be able to get off 2-3 shots, which would have been enough time to affect their escape.

Condition: Very good overall, The complete pistol in this example (frame, slide and barrel assembly) have been nicely fabricated as a display to show or demonstrate to what unique weapons were produced during WWII for the OSS and/or the British SOE . The frame exhibits a roughly machined interior and exterior with a new/current production (non-firing) slide and barrel assembly. The frame, slide and barrel assembly are all void of any markings which would have been correct for this type of weapon. The canvas/web belt, metal holster all appear to be correct and match the pictures and overall appearance in the reference book noted above. A very scarce example of a unique WWII clandestine weapon.
